First-generation at Sonoma State
First-gen Seawolves
At Sonoma State University, over 46% of students are the first in their families to pursue a bachelor's degree. Through both academic and student success programs, SSU provides a robust network of support to increase the retention and graduation of our first-gen students. The University also supports first-gen student success by:
Increasing the visibility of the first-generation student experience, highlighting the strengths and unique talents they possess, and celebrating their identity, so all students feel welcome and know they belong at SSU.
Raising awareness of first-generation-serving programs including the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), TRIO Student Support Services, TRIO Upward Bound and Academic Talent Search programs, TRIO McNair Scholars, and the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA).
Providing first-gen focused professional development to faculty & staff.
SSU's Commitment to First-gen Student Success
In 2022, Sonoma State University earned the designation of a First-gen Forward Institution and is currently in the Network Member phase of the FirstGen Forward Network. The First-gen Forward Network is an initiative of NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, and recognizes colleges and universities that have demonstrated a commitment to improving the experiences and advancing the outcomes of first-generation college students.
